I can see clearly now.......
A little more work completed on Project Polo today. The new wiper motor arrived so it was off with the old and on with the new. Not before cleaning up the old rack and pinion workings and painting the frame with Hammerite though. Inspection shows no wear, no it was just a smear of grease on the ball joints and refit. The arms have had a quick spruce up too with nice gloss black paint - should be satin really, but I only had gloss on the shelf and it'll do for now.
I'm still waiting on the wiper blades from Eurocarprats, but a quick test shows everything in order for once they arrive.
While the wiper motor was out I was able to start to tackle the only bit of serious corrosion on the car, the battery tray area. This has a thick coating of black rubberised sealant on it, but I suspect acid has spilt and been left untreated, allowing the tin worm to get a grip. An hour with the flap wheel has removed all the rubber and most of the rust showing the true extent of the damage. I have cut and fabricated the lower battery retaining screw mount, but the top will take a bit of fathoming out to replicate the original.
As for the hole itself, that will be a C.A,D, job. (Cardboard Aided Design) with a cardboard template to be made up and then sheet steel cut to size, formed to shape and then welded in. Of course once the battery is in place no one will ever see this, but I want to make it look as near original as I can.
The forward battery clamp itself is missing, so for now a Nissan Micra clamp will be pressed into service, simply becasue I have one knocking around from our old racer. I suppose I will have to go and buy a battery next, as the test battery we have been using is off a Vectra, and too big to fit in the Polos tray.
