Handbrake complete,rear brakes almost done.
We now have the rear brakes fully refurbished on both sides and the handbrake cables hooked up so we can stop the car rolling away. New cylinders are nicely cleaned, painted and greased, wit the rear wheel bearings all repacked with grease and adjusted. The only bit missing is the copper pipe which will get manufactured and fitted when the brake flaring kit arrives later in the week.
The front nearside calliper has been stripped cleaned and painted and is just awaiting the seal kit to arrive, hopefully tomorrow.
A walk to the post office was first job of the day. The rear hatch gas strut I'd ordered arrived last week but didn't fit despite showing as compatible. The supplier Tetrosyl Express promptly replied to my email listing the correct part and agreed to refund the cost of the wrong part if I posted it back. The correct part was a fiver cheaper than the wrong part and with postage coming in at £3 I was going to be a couple of quid up on the deal, but even better when I arrived at the post office they informed me the printed label Tetrosyl provided for me via the online site allowed free postage. Top marks then to Tetrosyl for customer care.
Other progress today involved trying to free off the gearbox. The gear linkages and the shaft into the gearbox had been liberally squirted with WD40 every other day since we got the car 16 days ago, and some light tapping with a small hammer managed to get movement in and out of the gearbox, but still no gear selection. Removal of the gear linkages showed they are in good fettle and moving freely. The shaft into the gearbox itself goes in and out and turns as if ready to select a gear, but something must be amiss inside. It may end up being easier to replace it than diagnose the issue, and with a parts car sitting nearby in Brough ready to donate it's gearbox it could happen soon. I am not sure if that is a four or five speed however. The five speed box will fit, but needs modification work doing to the inner wing as it is longer, and the ratios may not be suitable for everyday use. Next alternative is a trip to Halifax, where a club member has a shed full of part stashed and will sell us an original four speed box cheaply. If that is what we end up doing it'll make sense to change the clutch and thrust bearing while we are in there.
We'll see what tomorrow brings, as I have another day off to fettle things.
